Things not to do in Oxford when you're poor
Today I made the mistake of going down Cowley Road when the shops were actually open. Bad idea. For my pocket at least. I'd commented to lanfykins that Cowley Road was the Mill Road of Oxford, but to be honest it's more like Mill Road is a pale immitation of Cowley Road. There is a huge music store, a vintage clothing/costume shop (Bead Games), a cheap and cheerful computer store, a comic shop, a games store, and worst of all, there is Polar Bear.

Polar Bear is a small music shop that sells new and second hand CDs that fall into the genre "stuff I like". To show you how random this can get, here's what caused me to come out 54 quid lighter today:

Various - Natural Born Killers Soundtrack
Divine Comedy - Absent friends
The Cure - Greatest Hits
MUSE - Hullabaloo (B sides / live)
Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels
Chumbawamba - Readymades

Then off to see Shrek 2 with Steve (who, having no LJ, clearly doesn't exist), after the consumption of a couple of pints of very nice cider. For a sequel, this was about as good as it gets. Not quite up to the original, but the only way to do that is to pull an Aliens and switch genres. However, given it was more of the same, it was pretty damn great, with some wonderful throwaway gags. Thoroughly entertaining, even if the irony of Cameron Diaz starring in a film about beauty being unimportant is all too obvious. Jennifer Saunders was superb as the Fairy Godmother, but Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots stole the show, but how could you not with a part like that? Mike Myers still can't do a Scottish accent, but no surprises there.

Mmmm, Polar Bear... I have to make conscious decisions not to pass them, or my bank balance suffers. Unfortunately my bank is that particular branch of NatWest just there so avoiding them is harder than it might be.

Clarification: that's 'not pass them' as in 'if I go anywhere near them I get sucked in' rather than 'going in there saves me money' which is one (incorrect) interpretation of my bad phrasing. It is 1am, that's my excuse.

Like I said, they're evil evil people. I had to stop looking and run away.
