Dialup - Her Most Regal Majesty, the Queen of Snark
void where prohibited, except by law
Today virgin.net's pathetic excuse for dialup irritated me to the extent that I wanted to switch to a dialup service with no cutoff. Looking at demon's webpages, their prices seemed much more reasonable than I'd remembered. It was only after ordering that I realised that they expect you to pay BT an extra 20 quid for the privilage of not being disconnected every two hours. So you can buy an ASDL Internet connection for about 20 quid a month (speed 512KBps, no disconnect) but if you want similar reliability out of a land line connection (speed 56kbps in only the wettest of wet dreams and certainly not anywhere near reality) you must pay almost twice as much? How the f*** do they justify these absurd pricing policies?

Oh gods, if my exchange isn't ADSL enabled by May I swear I'm going to hunt down the board of BT one by one with a high powered rifle.

I guess you've gone to the website and signed the 'get us ADSLed' petition thingy.

I'm using www.metronet.co.uk at the moment (my village got Broadband about half a year ago), and they're proving very good - the seem to have some real engineers in charge, and their pricing structure suits my 'lots of downloads one month and not much the next' online usage nicely.

No need any more. There's a national ADSL rollout ending June 2005. We will be one of the last places in the country to get broadband.

Your ADSL connection doesn't tie up circuits in a fabulously expensive set of telephone switches, while your dialup does.

I had a feeling it might be something along those lines.

But I'd assumed that it couldn't be that since I tie up the circuits anyway. I just have to tie up a different one every 2 hours.
