Heat Transfer Compound wears out, who'd have thought it?

Having been reluctant to try getting the heatsink off the processor, I waited until the PC locked up again, which was quite a while, since it ran at a reasonably stable 70 degrees with the case off. However, I've now given it a new coating of Heat Transfer Compound, and the temperature is back down to a more reasonable 65 degrees with the case on. It might benefit from another fan inside at some point, I suppose. Now I must resist the temptation to overclock it because I can. Stability is good.

Could be worth getting hold of some decent heat transfer compound; if you're ever in Cam I've got some Silver based stuff which is pretty good you can have if you like.

Thanks. The stuff I have I bought from Maplins back in the Pentium era. Wish I'd realised I'd never use that much of it.

The stuff I've got is Arctic silver which has been running fine for the past 3-4 years on a 1GHz Athlon of the warm variety.
