Caveat Emptor
A strong black mark against Watford Electronics / Savastore.

I bought a keyboard from them and the volume keys on it didn't work. I emailed them and they said return it via the website.

Having been through their returns process, they wanted to charge my 10 pounds if *they* couldn't find anything wrong with the keyboard, despite the fact it clearly didn't work on my system, and insisted on my agreeing to this before allowing me to return it.

Fortunately I checked the keyboard on the laptop before sending it back. It worked there. This enabled me to track down the fact that it was actually a registry corruption problem with the Hidserv service.

Hence:

"Your returns policy is dreadful, extortionate, and quite possibly
illegal under the UK distance selling regulations. I very much doubt I
will be buying from you again."

If it is, bring it up against them in a suit.

Tempting, but the small claims procedure would cost more than I would be likely to get out of it.

I think I may drop a line to their local Trading Standards though.

Then press charges?

It's unlikely to be a criminal offence. Just a civil one.

Why should I have to pay for their incompetence? No-one's forcing them to run a mail order business, are they? The difficulties inherent in distance selling mean that a simple and hassle free returns process is an esssential pre-requisite for operating such a business. Just about every other mail order company manages it without trying to intimidate their customers into not returning faulty goods for fear of extra charges. Frankly its insulting and rude, and I'm inclined to take my business elsewhere.
