Why I will never be on Facebook
The chances of someone from my past I never want anything to do with again finding me are much higher than the chances of an old friend I really miss finding me.

And besides. I'm the top hit for my name on Google. There are advantages to being a geek.

That makes no sense! If you're the top hit for your name on Google, how does not joining Facebook prevent someone finding you?

I'm not on Facebook because I don't like photos of myself. If you type my name into Google (not the shortened version) then you have to go to the third page to find a link not about me - it's about my dad ;-). Benefits of a relatively unique surname, I suspect.

you don't have to have a photo on facebook. I know quite a few who don't.

Because people stumble across people from their past accidentally on Facebook. While there are many people who I don't want contact with, I doubt any of them are actively stalking me.

Heh, I'm at least the top 50 hits for my name on Google, and I'm not even a geek. It does help having quite an unusual name though!

Snap. But then I am the only person in the world with my name. Although I know of one person whose name is an anagram of mine.

My given name, which all the people from my past I never want anything to do with know me by, while providing quite a few hits on Google is by no means unique. The name you all know me by, on the other hand, currently produces two pages of hits which are all me (mostly in comp.lang.python archives), apart from one news story about a drunk in Flintshire. (You can tell it's not me—I'd use my given name in court.)
