Cats are weird
I'm running off a copy of the 1897 rulebook to read on the way down to Retford. Nineve is absolutely fascinated by the printer, and is starting at it intensely. I only hope she doesn't decide it's prey and attack it.

<stares intently at the apostrophe in your post title>

I've seen some very strange uses of apostrophes lately - inconsistent within a sentence, for instance. I'm starting to suspect that the symbol is being reinterpreted as a general purpose marker for the end of the stem of a word.

You know there's an entire rant at the beginning of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" about how grammar nazis get infuriated by apostrophe abuse, which I'm totally with up the the point at which she starts complaining about the fact there's no apostrophe in the film "Two Weeks Notice". Which is wrong. There is no apostrophe in this title because the weeks are bloody well not possessive. "Two weeks" is a descriptor of the amount of notice.

If you're going to be a grammar nazi, you should apply your jackboots to the correct faces.

Which does nothing to mitigate the egregious grocer's apostrophe error I just committed and will now go and fix.

Parsley loves watching the DVD and video players. Not what they're showing on the television, but the flashing numbers on the front of the boxes. And especially the exciting whirring noises and actions which happen when the media is [sic] ejected. One of the advantages of a tray-load DVD is that with an eject button on the remote control it turns into an endlessly amusing cat game.

Mm, one of ours too. Although the other one is completely immune to such.

Bear also loves the printer, and will jump at it and "assist" the paper in coming out. Then again Bear also talks to people on MSN and surfs the net for gay bars.
